Thus ensues between the gruff rancher and "his" Ladies an enjoyable battle of the sexes in the best Western showdown.

With much effort and hard work of Farmer George Washington McLintock (John Wayne) has built up in the desert of the American southwest a small empire: he is the undisputed cattle baron of the area, has plenty of land and a sawmill, and contributes to the nearby small town even his name. The grumpy patriarch observed with great skepticism the constant influx of settlers, who are encouraged by the government to farm-ups, although the soil in the area is not really suited to be. He must also convey repeatedly between the anxious newcomers and the old-established Comanche tribes. But that is tough McLintock in dealing with settlers and cowboys, so hard he does with women. When his feisty, living separately from his spouse Katherine (Maureen O'Hara) appears to finally obtain a divorce and to take their daughter Becky (Stefanie Powers) after their return from college to the big city, the rough-and rancher knows first do not know how it happens. Once there, Katherine takes command in large farm house, chases the staff around and has the new housekeeper Louise (Yvonne De Carlo) in their place - in spite of everything Katherine considered as attractive as the feisty widow as a cook and rival. Louise's son, Devlin (Patrick Wayne), meanwhile Becky makes beautiful eyes. Thus unfolds on the property McLintock-a turbulent gender war. And as if that were not enough trouble, McLintock must also still bother with pedantic bureaucrats: Governor Humphrey (Robert Lowery) wants to relocate the tribe of peaceful Comanche chief Puma (Michael Pate). McLintock vehemently sets itself up for the rights of his old blood brother Puma. For he knows that the Indians would leave the field without a fight.
